  • Description

THE 12,000 ILLEGAL INDONESIAN IMMIGRANTS NOW DETAINED IN MINDANAO IN THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES, WILL SHORTLY BE REPATRIATED.THE MASS REPATRIATION WILL NOT MEAN A DETERIORATION IN RELATIONS BETWEEN BOTH COUNTRIES.IN FACT, INDONESIA AND THE PHILIPPINES HAD ALREADY ESTABLISHED BORDER CROSSING CHECKPOINTS TO SUPERVISE THE ENTRY AND EXIT OF INDONESIANS AND FILIPINO INTO EACH OTHERS TERRITORY.

THE INDONESIANS - ROUNDED-UP FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY - ARE NOW HOUSED IN DAVAO AND COTABATO PROVINCES AND OTHER NEIGHBOURING ISLANDS IN THE SOUTH.THEY SHOULD BE DEPORTED SOME TWO MONTHS AGO BUT HAD BEEN DELAYED BY INDONESIA'S INSISTENCE THAT THE IMMIGRANTS BE RE-SCREENED.

EARLY THIS WEEK, FILIPINO IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS CHECKED THE NECESSARY PAPERS OF INDONESIANS DETAINED IN COTABATO PROVINCE.THEY ARE THE FIRST BATCH OF ABOUT 1,400 WHO WILL BE REPATRIATED SHORTLY ABOARD AN INDONESIAN SHIP.

MEANWHILE, THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT IS PLANNING TO RECOVER SOME 4, 199 ACRES OF PUBLIC LAND IN THE POSSESSION OF INDONESIAN NATIONALS IN MINDANAO.THE LAND WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO LANDLESS FILIPINOS.
