Background: In Jerusalem, on Sunday (4 June), thousands of Israelis celebrated the eleventh anniversary of their take-over of the predominately Arab eastern sector of the city. Crowds danced in the streets; the Israelis regard this date as the celebration of the liberation of East Jerusalem. There was increased security precautions following explosion in a bus two days earlier, (2 June), when six people died.

SYNOPSIS: The Israelis paraded along streets linking the Arab and israeli sectors of Jerusalem. The night of singing and dancing came as Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin said Jerusalem would remain what he called one city,"united and liberated for eternity".

The Israelis took over East Jerusalem during the 1967 war - and, ever since, have refused to consider returning it to Arab rule. This rigidity has remained an emotional issue with many Arabs because of the Islamic holy sites in East Jerusalem. Palestinians, uprooted from their homes, have resorted to guerrilla tactics to register their protest - the Palestinian Liberation Organisation claimed responsibility for the bus bomb on the eve of the Israeli celebrations.

The all-night celebrations ended at the Wailing Wall - a potent physical symbol showing why Israel insists on retaining control of the eastern section of Jerusalem.

The wall, dating back to the time of King Solomon, is one of the most sacred shrines for Jews - and the Israelis are determined to keep the right to pray in the heart of the Arab sector of Jerusalem.
