  • Description

Special precautionary measures were taken in Limbe and Blantyre, Nyasaland, July 24, after publication of the Devlin Commission's report on the Nyasaland disturbances earlier in the year. Although police were re-inforced by special constabulary, all remained quiet. Apart from a rush to buy copies of the report, life went on at its usual pace.

An auction of the season's tobacco crop at Limbe illustrates one disaster of the disturbances. Almost one quarter of the crop was burnt as useless due to insufficient attention.

The Nyasaland Government announced July 25 "there has been no deterioration in the general situation following the publication of the Devlin report."
The report vindicates the Nyasaland Governor's resort to emergency powers, but does not accept the Government's claim of a widespread plot of murder and assassination.

Britain's 'Shadow Cabinet'--formed by members of the Opposition--meet July 27 to form their challenge to the Government on the report's findings. It is expected they will call for the resignation of both the Governor of Nyasaland, Sir Robert Armitage, and the Colonial Secretary Lennox Boyd. They will also call for immediate release of African Congress Leader Dr. Hastings Bands and other imprisoned Congressmen.
