THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) VISITED THE SCENE OF THE RECENT?

  • Description

THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) VISITED THE SCENE OF THE RECENT DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKES NEAR KOYNA, IN WEST BENGAL. MRS. GANDHI ADDRESSED CROWDS IN KOYNA -- MANY OF THEM LEFT HOMELESS BY THE TREMORS -- AND INSPECTED THE THREATENED KOYNA DAM.

MRS. GANDHI DROVE 40 MILES (65 KMS) FROM THE NEAREST AIRFIELD TO KOYNA. ON THE WAY SHE PASSED THROUGH THREE VILLAGES WHERE THE EARTHQUAKES HAD TAKEN A HEAVY TOLL. SHE STOPPED BRIEFLY IN EACH VILLAGE TO OFFER CONSOLATION AND TO PROMISE REHABILITATION AID.

SHE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY LOCAL DIGNITARIES AND A PARTY OF GOVERNMENT ADVISORS. IN KOYNA SHE WAS SHOWN DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKES THREE WEEKS AGO, IN WHICH SOME 200 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 10,000 LEFT HOMELESS. ENGINEERS WERE CONCERNED THAT CRACKS IN THE HUGE KOYNA DAM COULD DEVELOP AND EVENTUALLY BURST. IN FACT, INDIAN SEISMOLOGISTS PUT FORWARD THE THEORY THAT THE PRESSURE OF WATER IN THE DAM ITSELF HAD BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TREMORS.

MRS. GANDHI DONNED A WORKMAN'S "HARD-HAT" FOR THE TOUR OF THE DAM. SHE VISITED THE OBSERVATION TOWER, AND WAS LATER SHOWN SOME OF THE SMALL CRACKS IN THE DAM'S STRUCTURE.

THIS WEEK SEVEN MORE MINOR EARTH TREMORS SHOOK WESTERN INDIA, BUT NO DAMAGE OR CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.
