  • Description

WEST GERMANY LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) WON THE EUROPEAN FOUR-MAN BOBSLED CHAMPIONSHIPS AT CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, IN THE ITALIAN ALPS. THEIR NUMBER ONE TEAM HEADED BY WOLFGANG ZIMMERER CLOCKED THE FASTEST TIMES ON BOTH DESCENTS TO LEAD A FIELD OF TWELVE SLEDS FROM SEVEN COUNTRIES.

THE GERMAN VICTORY WAS SOMETHING OF AN UPSET - RUMANIA AND ITALY WERE THE BIG FAVOURITES BUT THEY COULD DO NO BETTER THAN THIRD AND FOURTH PLACE RESPECTIVELY. SPAIN WAS SECOND, LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF A SECOND BEHIND.

GERMANY'S NUMBER TWO TEAM WAS FIFTH, THEN CAME THE TWO SWEDISH BOBS AHEAD OF THE AUSTRIAN TEAMS. THE FRENCH TOOK 10TH AND 12TH PLACE AND ITALY'S NUMBER TWO WERE ELEVENTH.

THE INTERNATIONAL JURY DECIDED TO AWARD THE TITLE ON THE BASIS OF TWO DESCENTS INSTEAD OF THE REGULATION FOUR BECAUSE OF UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS. FRESH SNOW ON THE TRACK PREVENTED THE SLEDS FROM REACHING THEIR TOP SPEEDS.
