Background: Saturday was the fifteenth anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. The occasion was marked by a parade at the headquarters of the Norther Army Group and Second Allied Tactical Air Force at Rheindahlen in West Germany.
Guests of honour at the ceremony were the West German Defence Minister, Herr von Hassel; the Belgian Embassy Counsellor, M. Gerard; the Canadian Ambassador, Mr. Starnes; the Netherlands Ambassador, Baron von Ittersum; and the British Ambassador, Sir Frank Roberts.
NATO troops were inspected by the West German Defence Minister accompanied by General Sir William Stirling, commanding Northern Army Group, and Lieutenant General Burniaux, commanding Second Allied Tactical Air Force.
Since the signing of the treaty in 1949, the NATO powers have developed an active armed force of more than 5,000,000 men.
