  • Description

The World Health Organisation has reported that more than a hundred people have died form cholera in the Ivory Coast. WHO has already reporter 60 deaths in Guinea, and serious infection in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

There is thought to be a grave danger of the epidemic spreading to Dahomey, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. It is the first known outbreak of cholera south of the Sahara.

The World Health Organisation is breaking its own rules in reporting in incidence of the disease without reference to the medical authorities of the countries concerned. But a WHO spokesman said that the situation was potentially serious and they intended to publish all they knew about the spread of the disease without waiting for permission.

Vaccination campaigns, already on mass scale, are being stepped up further in threatened countries of West Africa. And other countries are sending vaccine. Holland is sending nearly GBP 4,000 to the Ivory Coast. France has promised to send some of Sierra Leone. The World Health Organisation has already sent supplies to West Africa. Most of the vaccine is administered with hypodermic needles; but in Freetown, mass vaccination is being carried out by means of pneumatic injectors.
