Background: Cut off from the outside world by landslides brought down from mountainsides by torrential rain, the small Swiss village of Val Calanca was nevertheless recently visited by 'Saint Nicholas'.

With his sure footed mule, 'Saint Nicholas' was able to get through the boulder strewn pass to deliver Christmas presents to the village children.

Greeting his arrival with looks of apprehension, the children's attitude quickly turned to joy as the benevolent 'Saint' handed out bags containing toys and sweets.

Hurrying off home the children eagerly displayed the gifts to their parents who, seated around the fireside, shared the youngsters excitement, although they knew that if the pass was not cleared before the snows came it would be a hard winter for Val Calanca.
