  • Description

IT'S BREEDING TIME FOR THE EMUS AT LONE PINE SANCTUARY NEAR BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA.

THE MALE EMU TAKES OVER ONCE THE EGGS HAVE BEEN LAID AND SETTLE DOWN TO THE JOG OF HATCHING...AND SAFEGUARDING THE EGGS IS A JOB WHICH THE IMU TAKES VERY SERIOUSLY INDEED.

IF NOT THE BRIGHTEST BIRD, THE EMU HAS STRONGLY DEVELOPED SENSE OF PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY.

ALL THIS TIME OF COURSE THE EGGS ARE LEFT UNGUARDED WHICH SEEMS RATHER TO DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF THE IMU'S SINGLE MINDED PURSUIT.

IMU EGGS ARE GREEN AND WEIGH ABOUT ONE AND A HALF POUNDS. IN THIS CASE THERE ARE TWO IN THE NEST WHICH ARE ANXIOUSLY INSPECTED BY THE RETURNING EMU.

THE EGGS TAKE ABOUT EIGHT WEEKS TO HATCH AND FOR MOST OF THIS TIME THE MALE IMU IS EITHER SITTING ON THE OF NEVER STRAYING FAR AWAY UNLESS OF COURSE THE NEST IS THREATENED . SO IT LOOKS LIKE A LONG WAIT AHEAD.
