  • Description

As the Sistine choir sang mass, the Pope rose and mounted the five scarlet-covered steps to another throne next to the Holy Door, which is opened only on the occasion of jubilees, every 25 years.

There the Pontiff received the homage of his richly- bed cardinals - the men who elected him successor of Pius 12. One by one they approached the throne, knelt before him and kissed his bishop's ring, and gave the traditional kiss on both cheeks.

Here the Pope prays again and once more receives the Cardinals' homage. He blesses them with the words "sit nomen Domini benedictum". His mantle is replaced by a tunicle, a dalmatic and a chasuble. The mitre is placed on his head.

Then with the mitre removed, the Pope began the most prominent hymn of the ecclesiastical rites in the Christian liturgies - GLORIA IN EXCELSIS - (Glory to God in the highest).
