    PRESIDENT DADDAH IN SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNTRY'S ONLY POLITICAL PARTY, THE MAURITANIAN PEOPLE'S PARTY. ADDRESSING THE PARTY'S COUNCIL, THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE GENERAL ELECTIONS PUT OFF UNTIL AUGUST 1971 TO COINCIDE WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.

    THE ELECTIONS WERE TO HAVE BEEN HELD NEXT MONTH.

    MAURITANIA GAINED FULL INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE IN 1960. IT WASN'T UNTIL 1961 THAT PRESIDENT DADDAH TOOK OFFICE FOR THE FIRST OF HIS FIVE YEAR TERMS. HE WAS RE-ELECTED IN 1966 FOR A SECOND TERM.

    THE SIX DAY COUNCIL MEETING WAS ATTENDED BY LEADING POLITICIANS FROM ALL PARTS OF MAURITANIA.
