  • Description

About 3,000 people from the San Blas industrial suburb of Madrid, Spain, took to the streets on Wednesday (30 June) in a noisy, but otherwise peaceful demonstration march.

SYNOPSIS: They were making public their claim that the Spanish government is not giving sufficient priority to housing for people living in urban working class areas. Leaders of the demonstration spoke to the crowd through megaphones and received enthusiastic support for their efforts.

Following the speeches the demonstrators took up chants of "Unity", "houses not slums" and "democracy".

Spanish security forces kept a watchful eye on the proceedings - from a helicopter overhead and from jeeps on the ground. But although emphatic in its demands, the demonstration remained orderly and without incident as it wound its way through the streets of the San Blas suburbs.

Since the death of General Franco and subsequent relaxation of controls on political meetings there have been an increasing number of protest demonstrations in Spain - and on some occasions police have intervened to break up crowds.
