  • Description

THE KENYA RED CROSS SOCIETY WAS PREPARING YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO SEND A TEAM TO KABURINI SHANTY TOWN, NEAR PUMWANI, NAIROBI, TO HELP ABOUT 6,000 PEOPLE MADE HOMELESS WHEN A FIRE GUTTED THEIR HOMES EARLY ON WEDNESDAY.

IT WAS THE SECOND BLAZE IN THE SHANTY AREA WITHIN SEVEN MONTHS AND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS STERLING WORTH OF PROPERTY HAS BEEN DESTROYED. IN THE PREVIOUS BLAZE ONE MAN DIED, BUT WEDNESDAY'S OUTBREAK CLAIMED NO FATALITIES. LIVESTOCK AND HOUSEHOLD ANIMALS PERISHED, HOWEVER.

THE 2,000 HOUSES CONSTRUCTED OF WATTLE AND CARDBOARD HAVE BEEN A THORN IN THE SIDE OF NAIROBI CITY COUNCIL, SINCE THEY WERE PUT UP ILLEGALLY.

A PALL OF FLAME AND SMOKE ROSE ABOVE THE SHANTY TOWN IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING, AND A WOMAN WAS LATER DETAINED FOR QUESTIONING. THE CITY FIRE BRIGADE ARRIVED IN TIME TO SAVE ONLY A FEW OF THE SHACKS. FIRE OFFICERS SAID THAT IF THE ALARM HAD BEEN RAISED EARLIER THEY COULD HAVE SAVED MORE.

NAIROBI'S TOWN CLERK, MR. J.P. MBOGUA, SAID THE COUNCIL WOULD NOT ALLOW SIMILAR HOUSES TO BE ERECTED AGAIN AS THEY WERE AN EYESORE AND A HEALTH HAZARD. THE HEADMAN OF THE VILLAGE APPEALED TO VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS AND NAIROBI CITIZENS TO HELP THE VICTIMS.
