The second day of the on the spot session of the Girard trial opens at 10:12 am. September 25th in a tent pitched on the muddy terrain at the Somagahara (Camp Weir) firing range. On this day a key witness, Japanese shell scavenger Hidetsugu Onozeki, testified that he saw Girard fire at Mrs. Naka Sakai and saw her fall dead.
Girard was pointed out by Onozeki as the soldier whom he saw fire at a Japanese woman. Onozeki further stated that he saw the woman all and at the same time noticed Girard's position. The American soldier who fired at the woman was the first to touch Mrs. Sakai after she fell the witnessed continued. Onozeki claimed that he was 8 to 10 meters away from the scene of the shooting.
Onozeki, together with Specialist Third Class Victor M. Nickel, is reported to be the only person who witnessed the shooting incident from beginning to the end last January. Nickel testified yesterday, Sept. 24th.
Chief Judge Yuzo Kawachi, after a conference with prosecution and defense postponed the outdoor session set for tomorrow (Sept. 26th) because of the impossible road caused by the rain at the firing range. The session will convene at the Maebashi Court House instead.
