  • Description

Violence flared briefly in Buenos Aires when police broke up Peronist meeting. The Peronists-members of the Tacuara nationalist group--overturned a station wagon, threw stones, attacked a soft drink stand, and rioted briefly before the police dispersed them.

The rally was called Friday (23 August) to honour the late Felipe Vallese, an active member of the Peronist Metal Workers Union.Vallese vanished mysteriously a year ago.Officials of the Union charged that the metal worker had been arrested, tortured and killed by the police because of his Peronist activities. The police, on the other hand, have denied ever making the arrest.Various Peronist groups have idolized Vallese and have made him something of a martyr.

Friday's rally was to have been a memorial to Vallese. However, the police banned it, and when the group met anyway, moved in to break it up.Tacuara nationalists began rioting, presumably intending to provoke an incident.Members of the riot squad and officers in plain clothes fired into the air to disperse the demonstrators, and arrested some of them. The affair lasted only a few minutes.
