Background: "Constructive and positive". That's how President Seyni Kountche of Niger described his talks in Bamako, Mali, over the Mali-Upper Volta border dispute. The Niger leader flew to Bamako on Monday (February 17) where he joined President Senghor of Senegal in their three way discussions with the Mali leader Colonel Moussa Traore.

There have been reports that the festering border dispute haled to the deaths of Mali nationals living in the disputed area of Upper Volta.

The two nations are arguing over 100 miles (160 kms) of frontier in the Agacher region. There have been clashes but the exact extent of dead and injured is not known.

Presidents Kountche and Senghor flew to Bamako following latest reports which said the dispute was worsening. After discussions with President Traore the two leaders flew on to Ouagadougou, the Upper Volta capital, for talks with President Sangoule Lamizana.

The dispute is likely to be the main topic at the next summit meeting of the Economic Community of West Africa.
