  • Description

WILLY FAVRE, A 20-YEAR-OLD SWISS RACER, ON WEDNESDAY WON THE MEN'S GIANT SLALOM, THE FIRST EVENT OF THE FIVE-DAY INTERNATIONAL CRITERIUM BEING STAGED AT THE VAL D' ISERE IN THE FRENCH ALPS. IT WAS THE FIRST BIG RACE ON THE PRE-OLYMPIC SKI CALENDAR.

FAVRE FLASHED THROUGH THE 59 GATES LAID OUT ON THE THIN SNOW COVERING OVER THE SOLAISE SLOPE WITH FAULTLESS FORM TO BEAT JEAN-CLAUDE KILLY, 20, OF FRANCE. FAVRE WAS TIMED IN 1:31.51 FOR THE 1,400-METRE COURSE WITH A DROP OF 380 METRES. KILLY WAS CLOCKED IN 1:31.05.

THE FRENCH VETERAN, GUY PERILLAT, WHO HAS BEEN CONCENTRATING ON THE SPECIAL SLALOM, TOOK THIRD PLACE IN 1:33.22. FOURTH PLACE WENT TO THE AMERICAN, JIMMY HUEGA, OF TAHOE CITY, CALIFORNIA IN THE TIME OF 1:34.57.

FILM SHOWS SPECTATORS, SEVERAL OF THE COMPETITORS AND THE WINNER AND RUNNERS-UP.

THE EVENT ATTRACTED 74 COMPETITORS OF WHOM 15 WERE DISQUALIFIED OR RETIRED AFTER FALLS. THE SNOW WAS PACKED VERY HARD WHICH MADE THINGS DIFFICULT FOR THE LATER STARTERS.

THE TWO TOP SEEDS, AUSTRIANS GERHARD NENNING AND PEPPI STIEGLER, WERE NOT COMPETING THIS YEAR, NOR WAS THE GERMAN TEAM. HOWEVER, SPORTING CRITICS ARE TIPPING FAVRE AND KILLY TO REPRESENT A NEW WAVE OF EUROPEAN SKIERS. KILLY, A NATIVE OF THE FRENCH ALPS, HAD A FANTASTIC STRING OF SECOND-PLACE FINISHES LAST YEARS. IN THIS EVENT, THE FIRST OF THE SNOW SEASON, HE LOOKED A WINNER ALL THE WAY.
