  • Description

LARGE CROWD AT THE CRYSTAL PALACE STADIUM IN LONDON SAW A TEAM OF BRITISH GIRLS BEAT THE WORLD 4 X 400 METRES RECORD. EARLIER AN INTERNATIONAL INVITATION 10,000 METRE RACE HAD BEEN WON EASILY BY BRITAIN'S DICK TAYLOR, WHO SURPRISINGLY RAN AWAY FROM RON CLARKE.

THE NEW WORLD RECORD FOR THE FOUR TIMES 400 METRES IS 3 MINUTES 37.6 SECONDS AND WAS SET BY JENNY PAWSEY (55.4 SECONDS FOR HER LAP), PAULINE ATTWOOD (56,1 SECONDS), JANET SIMPSON (53.2) AND LILLIAN BOARD (52.9). THE EVENT IS A NEW ONE, SO THE BRITISH TEAM WHO BEAT A STRONG EST GERMAN TEAM ARE THE FIRST TO HOLD THE RECORD.

THE RACE WHICH WAS MOST EAGERLY AWAITED WAS THE 10,000 METRES INTERNATIONAL INVITATION RACE. A STRONG FIELD WAS HEADED BY WORLD RECORD HOLDER, AUSTRALIAN RON CLARKE, AND HIS COMPATRIOT. DON CLAYTON, THE FASTEST MAN IN THE WORLD FOR THE MARATHON. CLARKE WAS HOPING THAT A FAST PACE WOULD BE SET EARLY IN THE RACE, AND THAT HE WOULD BE ABLE TO LOWER HIS RECORD, BUT THOUGH THE PACE WAS FAST IT WAS BRITAIN'S DICK TAYLOR WHO PASSED CLARKE AND BUILT UP A SUBSTANTIAL LEAD, WINNING THE RACE BY OVER 14 SECONDS FROM CLARKE WITH ANOTHER BRITISH RUNNER, MIKE TAGG, THIRD. TAYLOR'S TIME OF 28 MINUTES 6.8 SECONDS WAS A NEW UNITED KINGDOM RECORD. THE RECORD WAS PREVIOUSLY HELD BY MIKE FREARY WITH A TIME OF 28 MINUTES 26 SECONDS.
