  • Description

The 3rd Conference of Afro-Asian Writers, which opened in Beirut, Lebanon, last Saturday, closed yesterday (Wednesday) after the adoption of a number of resolutions condemning Israel, Britain, Portugal, the United States and France. The delegates left today to tour Syrian positions facing Israel, and will tomorrow visit Palestine refugee camps in Southern Lebanon.

About 150 writers from some 40 African and Asian countries attended the conference. The People's Republic of China was not represented -- it boycotted the conference and is planning to hold a similar conference of its own in Peking. The Chinese claim the Soviet Union organised the conference "to split and betray the Afro-Asian people's revolutionary spirit."
The Beirut Conference praised the decision of the Front for the Liberation of South Yemen (FLOSY) to boycott the three-man United Nations mission to Aden Resolutions also deplored the presence of Foreign military bases in Saudi Arabia, Bahreign, Cyprus, Israel and South Vietnam.

All "progressive writers" were urged to confront "the great cultural conspiracy waged by the Zionist movement and resist the misleading cultural invasion by Israel".
