    TWENTY SEVEN TUNISIANS WENT ON TRIAL IN TUNIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BEFORE A STATE SECURITY COURT, FACING A POSSIBLE DEATH PENALTY ON CHARGES WHICH INCLUDE PLOTTING AGAINST THE EXTERNAL SECURITY OF THE STATE. TODAY'S SESSION WAS TAKEN UP WITH READING OF THE FORMAL ACCUSATIONS AND WITH INTERROGATION OF FOUR OF THE DEFENDANTS.

    THREE OF THE MEN TODAY ADMITTED THAT THEY HAD ENVISAGED CREATING A BAATHIST POLITICAL PARTY IN TUNISIA, BUT THEY DENIED THAT THEY HAD INTENDED TO HARM THE TUNISIAN REGIME. THEY SAID THEY HAD TAKEN PART IN NO SUBVERSIVE ACTION, BUT HAD KEPT TO A PURELY IDEOLOGICAL LEVEL.

    THE 27 ARE ALLEGED TO HAVE HAD CONTACTS WITH AGENTS SENT BY SYRIA WITH THE AIM OF SETTING UP A BAATHIST PARTY IN TUNISIA. THEY WERE ARRESTED AFTER DISTURBANCES AT TUNIS UNIVERSITY LAST MARCH.

    AT A SEPTEMBER TRIAL, 104 OTHERS ARRESTED AT THE SAME TIME AND DESCRIBED AS COMMUNISTS AND MAOISTS RECEIVED SENTENCES OF UP TO 14 YEARS IMPRISONMENT.
