Four thousand Olympic athletes from over 70 nations assembled in St. Peter's Square, Rome, Aug 24, to be received in mass audience by Pope John XXIII on the eve of the 17th Olympic Games.
During the audience - the first he has held actually in St. Peter's Square - the Holy Father gave a ten-minute address in Latin (S.O.F.). His words were translated into many languages for the athletes, who represented many races as well as different religious faiths.
Later came the blessing (S.O.F.), and with it the Pope ended an audience which, he said, was unprecedented in the history of the Church. He invoked Divine Blessings on the athletes of each nation, "fraternally united in the competition of the Olympic Games".
