    INDIA'S NORTH-EAST FRONTIER IS REPORTED TO BE QUIET STILL AS THE CHINESE FORCES WITHDRAW FROM POSITIONS THEY CAPTURED DURING THEIR BORDER CLASH WITH INDIAN FORCES LAST MONTH.

    THE CHINESE TROOPS HAVE NOW WITHDRAWN PAST THE VILLAGE OF DIRONG DZONG, ABOUT 25 MILES NORTH OF BOMDILLA. BEFORE WITHDRAWING FROM THE VILLAGE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE CHINESE HANDED OVER TO INDIAN AUTHORITIES 368 WOUNDED OR SICK PRISONERS AND II BODIES OF INDIAN TROOPS WHO DIED AFTER CAPTURE.

    THIS WAS THE THIRD GROUP OF PRISONERS RELEASED SINCE THE CEASE-FIRE ON NOVEMBER 22 WHICH ENDED A MONTH-LONG BATTLE BETWEEN INDIAN AND CHINESE FORCES IN THE HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS AND PASSES. SO FAR, 607 ILL OR WOUNDED PRISONERS HAVE BEEN RETURNED BY THE CHINESE.

    PRISONERS HANDED OVER AT DIRANG DZONG WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE MAIN INDIAN BORDER CENTRE OF TEZPUR AND THEN TRANSFERRED TO AIRCRAFT FOR THE FLIGHT TO DELHI.

    MOST OF THE PRISONERS HANDED OVER BY THE CHINESE HAD BATTLE INJURIES AND SOME WERE SUFFERING FROM FROST BITE.
