  • Description

In spite of heavy rain, the International ski-jumping season opened at Oberstdorf, West Germany, Dec. 30, with the first round of the German-Austrian four-stage tournament. The tournament will be complete after a further contest in Germany, and two in Austria. Skiers from as far apart as Yugoslavia, Finland and Canada lined up for the start, and one of the first to jump was Gerry Gravelle, of Canada, who as No,13 had a lukier jump than Peter Wenger, No. 31, of Switzerland.

The winner was No. 47, Max Bolkart, of West Germany, and second was No. 50, Albin Plank, Austria.

A political shadow hung over the event, however: as the East German flag is not allowed to be hoisted din West Germany, competitors from the Soviet Union and East Germany did not take part.
