  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly last night (Tuesday) voted overwhelmingly in favour of a resolution calling on India and Pakistan to cease hostilities and withdraw their armed forces to their own territories. The resolution was approved by 104 votes to 11 against, with ten abstentions.

The 12-hour emergency session was necessitated by the deadlock reached in the Security Council on Monday over a similar resolution.

This film shows Soviet representative Jacob Malik speaking - He unsuccessfully proposed an alternative resolution linking the ceasefire with a demand that Pakistan should simultaneously take action towards a political settlement in East Pakistan. Later Mr Malik demands a roll-call on the voting.

It also shows an extract from the Speech by Pakistani Ambassador Agha Shahi.
