  • Description

The French Naval warship, "D'Estienne D'Orves", arrived in the port of Abidjan, on the Ivory Coast, on Monday (15 September ) to start a four day good will visit.

The torpedo gunboat came from a similar tour to Brazil, and was inspected by the Commander of the Ivory Coast Navy, Timite Lassina.

The "D'Estienne D'Orves" is the latest in a new line of anti-submarine vessels built in Lorient, France, which is their home base.

The ship is 80 metres (280 feet) long and 10 metres (35 feet) wide. It has a displacement of 1,170 tons and a top speed of 24 knots.

The "D'Estienne D'Orves" is heavily armed with 10 and 20 millimetre canons and 38 millimetre surface missiles, and, especially for submarine warfare, it has .375 rocket torpedoes.

The vessel was named after a marine officer of the Free French Army in World War II, who was the first man to parachute into occupied France in 1940. He was executed by the Germans upon his capture. It is one of thirteen torpedo gunboats which bear the names of French naval men who served during the Second World War.

Captain M. Florentin commands the gunboat which has a crew of seven officers, 29 junior officers and 41 seamen.

From Abidjan its next port of call is Dakar, in Senegal, before the final leg back to base.
