A famous United States aircraft carrier of the Second World War, the "Bunker Hill", is at last to be scrapped. The ship was in many of the battles against the Japanese in the Pacific and was nicknamed the "Grey Ghost" because her pilots flew off in search of their enemy in the pre-down light.

But on May 11, 1945 off the island of okinawa, two Japanese ???de pilots crashed their 'planes on the ???rrler's flight deck. The ship was ???verely damaged and 245 members of the Bunker Hill's ???ew ???led in the attack and the fire that followed.

Bunker Mill was not fully repaired after the war. And after service as a troop transporter the carrier was placed in the reserve fleet at Bremerton, Washington. Since 1965 the shop has been moored in San Diego harbour as a laboratory for developing and testing naval electronic systems. But now even that career is over and the Bunker Hill is to be sold for scrap.

To mark the occasion a bugler blew the last post at a ceremony attended ???y many of those who served on the carrier.
