  • Description

BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, HAROLD WILSON, IS ABOARD THE ROYAL NAVY ASSAULT VESSEL, H.M.S. FEARLESS, IN GIBRALTAR, FOR HIS MEETING WITH RHODESIAN PREMIER IAN SMITH.

SHORTLY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL, MR. WILSON HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE ON THE MISSILE DECK OF THE FEARLESS, WHERE HOLDING A GLASS OF BEER, HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT THE STARTING TIME FOR THE MEETING WOULD PROBABLY DEPEND ON HOW TIRED MR. SMITH FELT AFTER HIS 24-HOUR FLIGHT FROM SALISBURY. MR. WILSON SAID THEY WOULD MEET AND "PROBABLY HAVE A DRINK. I DON'T SUPPOSE WE'LL BE TALKING SOCIAL NICETIES."
MR. WILSON SAID IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO FORECAST HOW LONG THE TALKS WOULD LAST AND WARNED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO ADVANCE SIGNS THAT A SETTLEMENT MIGHT BE IMMINENT. HE LATER INSPECTED THE CONFERENCE ROOM IN FEARLESS, WHERE THE TALKS WILL BE HELD.
