  • Description

King Hassan II of Morocco reviewed on Monday (14 May) a parade of some 1,800 troops which he will send to Syria to help defend the Golan Heights area. The occasion also marked the 17th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Moroccan armed forces.

Equipped with new light weapons and in full combat dress, 31 companies of men paraded with their officers, led by General Abdeslam Sefrioui, formerly commander of the Royal Palace Guard.

After inspecting the trocos. the King who was accompanied by his son, Crown Prince Sidi Mohamed, presented General Sefrioui with a flag.

Later, in an address to the troops, the King said that they were "convinced and conscious of their mission which is to defend the Arab nation alongside their brother'.

He said they also had an "Islamic mission" which consisted "especially of the return of Jerusalem and the recovery of Arab dignity". He added that another force could be sent for in the future.

King Hassan has in the past been a moderating force in the Middle East conflict, advocating peace in the Arab world and Africa, and championing economic "liberalism", political freedom and democracy at home.

The decision to send troops to Syria was first made in a nationwide broadcast in February of this year.
