  • Description

TWO OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST DISTANCE RUNNERS, KIPCHOGE KEINO OF KENYA AND AUSTRALIAN RON CLARKE, CLASHED IN A 5000 METRES EVENT IN WEST BERLIN LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY). KEINO WON THE DUEL IN ONLY 2.4 SECONDS OUTSIDE HIS OWN WORLD RECORD. IN THE 100 METRES, THE JAPANESE SPRINTER, HIDEO IIJIMA, HELD OFF A STRONG GERMAN CHALLENGE TO WIN.

THE MEETING WAS HELD IN THE VAST OLYMPIC STADIUM, SCENE OF THE 1936 OLYMPICS, AND WATCHED BY A CROWD OF 20,000. IIJIMA'S WINNING TIME IN THE 100 METRES -- 10.1 SECONDS -- EQUALLED HIS PREVIOUS BEST TIME AND WAS ONLY ONE-TENTH OF A SECOND OUTSIDE THE WORLD RECORD. WEST GERMANY'S MANFRED KNICKENBERG WAS SECOND IN 10.3 SECONDS.

BUT THE EVENT THE CROWD WERE WAITING FOR WAS THE 5000 METRES. AUSTRALIA'S TONY COOKE SET THE EARLY PACE BEFORE KEINO, CLARKE AND WEST GERMANY'S HARALD NORPOTH (NO. 59) BROKE AWAY FROM THE BUNCH.

WITH ONE LAP TO GO, IT WAS CLARKE, HIMSELF A FORMER RECORD-HOLDER FOR THIS DISTANCE, IN THE LEAD. BUT KEINO, WHO BROKE THE AUSTRALIAN'S RECORD, SPURTED OVER THE LAST 300 METRES TO WIN IN 13 MINUTES 26.6 SECONDS FROM CLARKE, WHO CLOCKED 13 MINUTES 28.4 SECONDS.

KEINO'S ONLY COMMENT AFTER THE RACE WAS: "I WANTED TO WIN -- AND I WON." CLARKE SAID HE WAS SATISFIED WITH HIS PERFORMANCE, ADDING THAT HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT BE IN A POSITION TO TAKE BACK THE RECORD IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS' TIME.
