  • Description

The first scale model of Windsor Castle ever built is to be sent to the Rapperswill Museum of Castles, Switzerland, at the expense of the British Club, Zurich, and under the auspices of the British Council.

The town of Rapperswill has very close ties with Britain, especially with Leyton, Essex. For the last eight years there have been exchange visits between the young people of these two towns. Last year the Rapperswill inhabitants sent a fallow deer, named "Goldie", to the Prince of Wales. It is now in the London Zoo.

The model was built by Mr. Michael Lacey, an expert in theatrical and architectural models. Special permission was obtained from the Lord Chamberlain's Office and the Royal Library, Windsor, for Mr. Lacey to tour the castle to collect details and specifications.

Seven months after starting on this commission, Michael Lacey had constructed a model of Windsor Castle, including the Round Tower, St. George's Chapel, the Keep, the State Apartments and the formal gardens, to a scale of 1:288--that's 1" : 24". It is 7 feet long by 2 feet 9 inches wide by 14 inches.

The Castle will be handed over to the Swiss Castles Association by the British Ambassador in Switzerland, Sir William Montagu Pollock, on November 22. Mr. Lacey has been invited to fly over to Switzerland for the ceremony. In addition to the model 25 photographs of the interior of Windsor Castle are to be sent to the home-sick Britons in Zurich.
