    Voters in the Soviet Union went to the polls on Monday (14 June) in the four-yearly election of delegates to the Supreme Soviet, the country's parliament. Communist Party Leader, Leonid Brezhnev, and his wife were among early voters in the Moscow district of Bauman.

    More than 99 per cent of the Soviet electorate were expected to vote for the 1,517 officially sponsored candidates. The 150 million registered voters are selecting deputies for the Soviet Council, and the Chamber of Nationalists. All citizens over 18 year old can vote and Tass News Agency reported a preliminary could showed over half of the candidates are workers and peasants drawn from 62 nationalities.

    Moscow was in a holiday mood for the election with flags and portraits of party leaders on buses and public buildings. A vigorous campaign lasting more than a month led up to today's elections, allowing the Communist Party to explain its policies to the whole nation.
