  • Description

TALOS MISSILE WAS HOISTED INTO THE R-C-A EXHIBITION HALL IN THE PRE-DAWN HOURS OF WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, THRU A WINDOW THAT HAD BEEN REMOVED FOR THIS PURPOSE.

TALOS HOISTED INTO R-C-A EXHIBITION HALL IN PRE-DAWN HOURS TO AVOID TRAFFIC JAM
A TALOS MISSILE, A SUPERSONIC SURFACE-TO-AIR WEAPON, WAS HOISTED BY DERRICK THROUGH A WINDOW INTO THE R-C-A EXHIBITION HALL, 40 WEST 49TH STREET, EARLY THIS MORNING.

THE MISSILE -- ONE OF THE RARE SPECIMENS OF SPACE-AGE WARFARE TO BE SEEN ON THE STREETS OF MIDTOWN MANHATTAN -- WAS LIFTED INTO THE HALL SHORTLY AFTER MID-NIGHT IN ORDER TO CAUSE A MINIMUM OF DISRUPTION TO TRAFFIC. SPECIAL POLICE WERE ON DUTY TO DIVERT CARS FROM 49TH ST. BETWEEN FIVE AVE. AND THE AVENUE OF THE AMERICAS WHILE THE INSTALLATION WAS BEING ACCOMPLISHED. A TWELVE-FOOT-SQUARE PANE OF GLASS IN THE FACADE OF THE HALL WAS REMOVED TO PERMIT ENTRY OF THE MISSILE. THE TALOS, MINUS ITS EXPLOSIVE CHARGE, WILL BE THE FOCAL PART OF A NEW DISPLAY OF ELECTRONIC DEVELOPMENTS, WHICH WILL BE OPENED TO THE PUBLIC FRIDAY IN THE SECTION OF THE R-C-A EXHIBITION HALL FORMERLY USED AS THE SET FOR DAVE GARROWAY'S MORNING SHOW "TODAY" ON N.B.C. THE DISPLAY WILL DEPICT ELECTRONIC DEVELOPMENTS RANGING FROM MAJOR DEFENSE PROJECTS TO HOME ENTERTAINMENT, INCLUDING COLOR TELEVISION PROGRAMS EACH HALF HOUR.

THE TALOS, NAMED FOR THE MYTHICAL GREEK DEMIGOD, WHO GUARDED CRETE, WAS MOVED INTO THE EXHIBITION HALL IN TWO SECTIONS FROM TRUCKS, WHICH BROUGHT THEM FROM A STORAGE AREA IN LONG ISLAND.

THE FIRST WAS THE BOOSTER, THEN FEET LONG, THIRTY INCHES IN DIAMETER AND WEIGHING 1,000 POUNDS, A SOLID-FUEL ROCKET THAT IS JETTISONED AFTER PROPELLING THE SECTION CONTAINING THE WARHEAD TO A SPEED EXCEEDING THAT OF A BULLET. THE SECOND WAS THE WARHEAD SECTION ITSELF, TWENTY FEET LONG AND WEIGHING 2,000 POUNDS, WHICH, IN USE, CONTAINS A 40,000-HORSE-POWER RAMJET ENGINE CAPABLE OF HURLING THE TALOS TO ALTITUDES HIGHER THAN ANY KNOW BOMBER CAN REACH.

CONSTRUCTED BY THE BENDIX AVIATION CO., THE TALOS IS NOW IN USE ON NAVY WARSHIPS. IT ALSO HAS UNDERGONE TEST FIRINGS BY THE ARMY AT THE WHITE SANDS, NEW MEXICO, MISSILE RANGE FROM A LAND-BASED UNIT DEVELOPED BY THE RADIO CORP. OF AMERICA. THIS LAND-BASED UNIT, FROM WHICH THE TALOS HAS DEMONSTRATED ITS ABILITY TO INTERCEPT AND DESTROY OTHER MISSILES IN FLIGHT, OPERATES COMPLETELY AUTOMATICALLY. IN RESPONSE TO WARNING SIGNALS FROM REMOTE OUTPOSTS, IT COMPUTES THE POINTS AT WHICH TO INTERCEPT THE ENEMY TARGETS, THEN LOADS THE MISSILE LAUNCHERS, FIRES THE WEAPONS AND GUIDES THEM BY RADAR BEAMS TO THE TARGETS. THE MISSILE IS EXPECTED TO BE THE PRINCIPAL ATTRACTION IN THE NEW ELECTRONIC DISPLAY IN THE EXHIBITION HALL. A POPULAR SIGHT-SEEING SPOT IN N.Y., THE "HALL" DREW 1,700,000 VISITORS IN `57.
