  • Description

The Greyhound Derby - the world's richest dog race - was run at the White City Stadium, London, on Saturday and ended in a shock result when a 25 to 1 cutsider, Tartan Khan, romped home a clear winner.

Watched by a crowd of over 30,000, the five finalists went into the starting traps with the number 3 dog, Myrtown, a clear favourite after winning his last three races and establishing a new track record in the process. The Manchester dog had finished second in last year's Derby, but his strong finishing attracted a large share of the betting before the race.

Only five greyhounds went in to the traps, the sixth qualifier having been disqualified for fighting and banned from the final.

From the start, the fast trapping six dog, Pineapple grand, looked strong whilst Myrtown remained in the middle of the field.

But it was the unfancied Tartan Khan and the number one dog, Sally's Cobbler who made the running and the roar of the crowd increased as the huge bank of spectators realised that these two could not be caught. Only Pineapple Grand lived up to reputation, but was clearly beaten in to third place.

Trained in Manchester by Mrs G.Lynds - one of the few women trainers in greyhound racing - Tartan Khan had been prepared for the London race and the noise of the crowd by training alongside the man London-Manchester railway route, using the noise of the trains rushing by to accustomed him to the roar of the crowd.

Representatives from greyhound racing authorities in the USA, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and West Germany travelled to London to watch the final.
