Background: A SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT OF A SWITCH IN TOP PLACINGS UPSET THE RESULTS OF THE 1967 WORLD PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD IN CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND AT THE WEEKEND. MISTAKES IN THE NUMBERING OF THE PLOUGHING PLOTS LED TO THE WRONG RESULTS BEING ANNOUNCED WHEN THE CONTEST ENDED.

GUNNAR JOHANSSON OF SWEDEN, WHO WAS FIRST GIVEN AS OUTRIGHT WINNER, WAS LATER PLACED JOINT FIRST WITH FINLAND'S PAAVO TUOMINEN.

THE ALTERATIONS IN THE RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED AFTER THE CONTEST WAS FINISHED AND JOHANSSON HAD BEEN PRESENTED WITH THE TROPHY AS WORLD CHAMPION -- A GOLDEN PLOUGH.

JENS PETER KRISTENSEN OF DENMARK WAS PROMOTED FROM AN UNPLACED POSITION TO THIRD. OSMO HILLEBRANDT OF FINLAND DROPPED FROM SECOND PLACE TO FOURTH.

THE CHANGES WERE ANNOUNCED AT A CONCERT GIVEN AFTER THE PLOUGHING CONTEST BY THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE WORLD PLOUGHING ORGANISATION, MR ALFRED HALL OF ENGLAND, WHO SAID THAT MISTAKES IN NUMBERING THE PLOUGHING PLOTS HAD LED TO THE CONFUSION.

JOHANSSON AND TUOMINEN WON THE EVENT FROM AMONG TWENTY-SIX PLOUGHMEN FROM FIFTEEN COUNTRIES. THE COMPETITORS HAD TO PLOUGH HALF AN ACRE (1.25 HECTARES) OF ROUGH STUBBLE AND A FURTHER PLOT OF GRASSLAND.

THE COUNTRIES TAKING PART WERE AUSTRALIA, CANADA, DENMARK, FINLAND, WEST GERMANY, BRITAIN, HUNGARY, HOLLAND, NEW ZEALAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, NORWAY, THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, RHODESIA, SWEDEN AND THE UNITED STATES.

PRIZES WERE PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF NEW ZEALAND, SIR BERNARD FERGUSSON.
