SYNOPSIS: Sierra Leone President, Dr. Siaka Stevens, arrived at the Wilberforce Barracks in Freetown on Tuesday. He was there to attend a ceremony in which 60 army officers took oaths of allegiance to defend the President and People of Sierra Leone at all times.

Earlier this year President Stevens was the target of two assassination attempts by groups of dissident soldiers. At that time, soldiers entered the Prime Ministers compound and tried to gun down Dr. Stevens in his bedroom.

The officers taking the oath at the ceremony were told by the President that if anyone of them was unable to perform their duty, they should act honourably by relinquishing their posts.

After the officers signed the oaths of allegiance, they drank the cups of water that were a part of the official ceremony. Guests attending the event included members of the diplomatic corps.

At the ceremony, President Stevens told the audience that his government would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone, solider or civilian, who upset the affairs of the nation by subversive or unlawful means. He further stated that the Sierra Leone Government was determined to see that law and order prevailed so that development could proceed in the nation as planned.
