• Short Summary

The new U.S. Vice-President Walter Mondale made a flying visit to West Berlin on Wednesday?

  • Description

The new U.S. Vice-President Walter Mondale made a flying visit to West Berlin on Wednesday (26 January) to receive freedom of the city, inspect the Brandenburg Gate and hold brief talks with the city's governing mayor, Herr Klaus Schuetz. Mr Mondale also took time out to warn East Germany against "Tampering with the four-power rights over the whole of Berlin" laid down in wartime agreements and confirmed in 1971.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Mondale flew to West Berlin from Bonn where he's been holding talks with West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He was accompanied by West German's Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher.

Mr Mondale headed straight for the Brandenburg Gate, made a quick inspection tour of the infamous Berlin Wall and then returned to the West Berlin Town Hall. He was mobbed by cheering crowds, which included many American students.

Inside the town hall, Mr Mondale signed the "Golden Book", giving him freedom of the city -- or at least the western side of it.

Mr Mondale said the city's place in the western world was assured through its links with West Germany. He added that the United States stood by its commitment to use "whatever means may be necessary to resist any attempt to undermine the freedom of this city." Next stop on the Vice-President's 10-day six nation tour is Italy, where he'll have talks on the country's economic crisis.
