Background: In a rough game at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspurs won at home today (10th October) against Liverpool by the only goal of the game, scored by Martin Peters in the 63rd, minute.

The game opened quietly, the first thrills coming from a fine save by Liverpool goalkeeper Clemence from a good free-kick by Tottenham's Alan Mullery.

Tottenham put in some fast first-half raids, and Liverpool were forced back on defence to begin with.

Later however, they had some good first-half attacks. Twenty year-old forward Steve Heighway shot narrowly over the bar, and later came close with a left-foot drive.

But in the first half neither side was able to shake off dominance by the mid-field players; most of the alarms were caused by errors for example when Jennings, the Tottenham goalkeeper, dropped the ball eight minutes before half-time.

The second-half started fast and furious, with the referee soon reprimanding Perryman and Evans for rough play.

Both sides had good attacks, with Tottenham gradually getting on top. Peters had two shots blocked, then Perryman a good snap-shot.

Liverpool full-back Lindsay was booked for a foul on Gilzean, and then in the 63rd minute, Mullery passed forward to Kinnear, the full back centred, and Martin Peters flicked the ball into the net off Smith's outstretched leg.

Liverpool fought back hard, and the game became rougher. Both Perryman and England of Tottenham had their names taken by the referee.
