Soccer...and the New York Cosmos were beaten 4-1 by Flemengo in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (14 October). The Cosmos were without the legendary Pele, who has now retired, but they still fielded a strong side, which included former West German World Cup star Franz Beckenbauer.
SYNOPSIS: The Cosmos, playing in the white shirts, were the first to put on pressure, but it was Flamengo who went in front after only three minutes. A fierce drive from Claudio Adao was turned onto the bar, and Luis Paulo followed through to score.
Flamengo continued to control play, and in the 13th minute, Zico put them two goals ahead with a header from close range.
Just before half time, Englishman Tony Field had score for Cosmos, but in the 52nd minute Zico made it 3-1 to Flamengo with a tremendous drive.
Flamengo then replaced Zico with Tita. This move paid off. Tita got their fourth goal in the 74th minute. The attack advanced along the left flank. From the cross, Tita scored with an angled drive on the turn.
Such a defeat may have made Cosmos less euphoric about Brazilian players.
