  • Description

ISRAELI POLICE ARE HOLDING NINE ARABS FOLLOWING TUESDAY NIGHT'S BOMB BLASTS IN CENTRAL JERUSALEM THAT DAMAGED AN OLD BLOCK OF FLATS AND A NEARBY PRINTING SHOP.

SEVEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE THREE SIMULTANEOUS EXPLOSIONS BUT SIX WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE HOSPITAL AFTER FIRST AID TREATMENT. SECURITY OFFICIALS SAID THE BLASTS WERE AN ATTEMPT BY ARAB EXTREMISTS TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE DISPUTE OVER ISRAEL'S CONTROL OF ALL JERUSALEM, FOLLOWING THE JUNE WAR. THE BOMBS WENT OFF AT EXACTLY THE TIME THAT THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY OPENED ITS ANNUAL AUTUMN SESSION IN NEW YORK.

THE BOMBS WERE PLANTED INSIDE THE STAIRCASE OF A BUILDING 50 YARDS (METRES) FROM THE OLD CITY WALL. HARDEST HIT WAS A PRINTING SHOP ON THE GROUND FLOOR, OWNED BY A JEWISH IMMIGRANT FROM IRAQ. THE PRINTER WAS PREPARING NEW SCHOOLBOOKS FOR ARAB SCHOOLS IN JERUSALEM. THE OCCUPANTS OF THE FLATS IN THE BUILDING WERE AWAY AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION. FIFTY-FOUR FAMILIES LIVE IN THE BUILDING.

TWO OF THE ARRESTED ARABS WERE EMPLOYEES OF THE WRECKED PRINTING-SHOP. THE OTHER SEVEN WERE PICKED UP AFTER THEY WERE FOUND LOITERING IN THE AREA. ISRAELI SECURITY POLICE SAY THEY ARE TAKING AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS VIEW OF THE EXPLOSIONS AND THAT THOSE RESPONSIBLE WILL FACE STIFF PENALTIES.
