  • Description

TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IS BATTLE OF BRITAIN DAY - RECALLING THE DAY 25 YEARS AGO WHEN BRITAIN'S UNDERMANNED AIR FORCE DEALT HITLER'S LUFTWAFFE ITS GREATEST DEFEAT. AMONG THE CELEBRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY WILL BE A DISPLAY OF AIRCRAFT OLD AND NEW AT BIGGIN HILL, NEAR LONDON, ENGLAND'S MOST FAMOUS WARTIME FIGHTER STATION, ON SATURDAY. A PREVIEW WAS HELD YESTERDAY.

A QUARTER OF A CENTURY AGO TODAY, A DAY OF AERIAL BATTLES ACROSS ENGLISH SKIES ENDED WITH 185 GERMAN AIRCRAFT SHOT DOWN AT A COST OF 25 ROYAL AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT AND 11 PILOTS. IT WAS THE TURNING POINT IN THE BATTLE, WHICH BEGAN IN JULY 1940 AND LASTED UNTIL THE FOLLOWING OCTOBER. THE GERMANS LOST TWO AIRCRAFT TO EVERY BRITISH ONE, AND AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, THE THEN BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, PAID TRIBUTE WITH A PHRASE THAT HAS GONE DOWN IN HISTORY: "NEVER IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN CONFLICT WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW."
