  • Description

SYNOPSIS: AT EDWARDS, CALIF. TODAY, NEWSMEN WERE GIVEN A CLOSE LOOK AT THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION TEST SITE FOR THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL ROCKET ENGINE -- THE MIGHTY F-1.

IN THESE TEST STANDS -- EACH TALLER THAN A 10-STORY BUILDING -- THE ENGINES FOR THE GIANT SATURN V SPACE BOOSTER ARE TESTED BY THEIR BUILDER, THE ROCKETDYNE DIVISION OF NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION.

RECENTLY, THREE NEW TEST STANDS WERE ACTIVATED, DOUBLING THE CAPACITY OF THE 300-ACRE FACILITY AND MAKING IT THE MOST EXTENSIVE HIGH THRUST AREA IN THE FREE WORLD.

THE LIQUID PROPELLANT F-1 ENGINE PRODUCES ONE-AND-A-HALF MILLION POUNDS OF THRUST -- EQUIVALENT TO 32 MILLION HORSEPOWER.

FIVE OF THESE WILL BE CLUSTERED ON THE FIRST STAGE OF THE 30-STORY SATURN V TO GIVE MOONBOUND APOLLO ASTRONAUTS SEVEN AND ONE-HALF MILLION POUNDS OF LAUNCH THRUST -- TWENTY TIMES THAT USED TO LIFT FROM THE PAD OUR COUNTRY'S FIRST ASTRONAUTS.

AT THE EDWARDS FACILITY, ROCKETDYNE TEST FIRES THE ENGINES FOR DURATIONS OF UP TO TWO-AND-ONE-HALF MINUTES.

THEY ARE THEN SHIPPED TO THE MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER IN HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, FOR MATING WITH THE BOOSTER.
