    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) REVIEWED A PARADE OF THE PEOPLE'S DEFENCE FORCES AND OTHER SERVICE UNITS AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, MARKING SIX YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE.

    A PUBLIC HOLIDAY ALSO CELEBRATED THE ANNIVERSARY BUT MOST FESTIVITIES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED THIS YEAR BECAUSE TANZANIANS ARE FASTING FOR THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADHAN. THE MAIN CELEBRATIONS WILL BE HELD ON 12 JANUARY - ZANZIBAR REVOLUTION DAY.

    PRESIDENT NYERERE TOOK THE SALUTE AT THE PARADE AND THEN PRESENTED CUPS TO THE BEST FARMERS FROM EACH OF THE COUNTRY'S 17 REGIONS.

    TANZANIA RECEIVED INDEPENDENCE AS A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH ON 9 DECEMBER, 1961, AND BECAME A REPUBLIC ONE YEAR LATER.
