  • Description

Cambodia's Prime Minister, General Lon Nol, wound up a two-day visit to South Vietnam on Thursday (January 23) with talks at the Joint General Staff Headquarters and a visit to the National Training Centre at Vung Tau, forty miles south-east of Saigon.

The General accompanied by the South Vietnamese Prime Minister Tran-Thieu-Khiem, flew to the training centre by helicopter. They were welcomed by the centre's commander, Colonel Nguyen Van Be. He was then shown round the vast centre, which resembles a hamlet in the country. Chiefs from villages and hamlets throughout South Vietnam are trained at the centre in aspects of defence and pacification.

Before returning to Phnom Penh later in the day the General conferred with United States and South Vietnamese leaders on the military situation.

His visit to South Vietnam reflects the dramatic change in Cambodia's international relations since the overthrow of Cambodia's Head of State Prince Norodom Sihanouk last March. A few months earlier he had been host to the President of the Viet Cong Provisional Revolutionary Government, Huynh Tan Phat. Subsequently the General led the agitation among Prince Sihanouk's Ministers about the growing presence of Viet Cong guerrillas in sanctuaries in Cambodia.

A few hours after his return to Phnom Penh, units of Viet Cong launched a surprise attack on Friday (January 22) on the Cambodian capital and its international airport.
