  • Description

Thousands of farmers from all over Italy paraded peacefully through the streets of Rome today protesting against the Government's agricultural policy and demanding more money and better working conditions. The march, organised by the National Farmers Alliance, caused little trouble other than hampering traffic.

Men, women and children took part in the march carrying large black umbrellas with inscriptions reading "We are not second-class citizens" and "Less money to industrialists more to farmers".

The farmers are demanding higher wholesale prices, better medical care, higher pensions and State aid in the event of a major crop disaster.

The demonstrators marched from the Plazza Fsedra to the Plazza Santi Apostoli where they were addressed by Communist Parliament member Attilio Esposto.
