  • Description

IN WARSAW YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) HUNDREDS OF FACTORY WORKERS STAGED A MASS PROTEST AGAINST STUDENTS WHO, THEY SAY, INSTIGATED THE RECENT CLASHES WITH POLICE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. MEANWHILE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, POLICE AND MILITIA HAVE BEEN OUT IN FORCE TO PREVENT FURTHER STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS, BUT WARSAW HAS BEEN CALM.

THIS FILM WAS RECEIVED FROM POLISH TELEVISION VIA THE INTERVISION-EUROVISION NETWORK.

THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN CLASHES WITH POLICE OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS AS UNREST IN THE COUNTRY HAS MOUNTED.

WARSAW NEWSPAPERS HAVE BEEN RENEWING ATTACKS ON WRITERS WHO HAVE ALREADY BEEN LABELLED "ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE OF POLAND". ONE IN PARTICULAR, STEFAN KISIELEWSKI, A RIGHT-WING CATHOLIC WRITER, HAS BEEN SINGLED OUT FOR INDIVIDUAL CONDEMNATION. HE IS SAID TO HAVE CALLED POLAND'S COMMUNIST LEADERSHIP "A SCANDALOUS DICTATORSHIP OF THICKHEADS" IN A SPEECH REPRINTED IN LEAFLETS DISTRIBUTED AMONGST WARSAW FACTORY WORKERS DURING RECENT STUDENT-POLICE CLASHES.

THE CAPITAL IS NOW SAID TO BE CALM, BUT STUDENTS ARE REPORTED TO BE ANGRY OVER CONTINUING PRESS ATTACKS AGAINST THEM.
