    Kompong Cham on the West Bank of the Mekong River has been nearly deserted by residents as Cambodian Government troops prepare to defend the town against North Vietnamese and Vietcong forces.

    The Government forces have been firing mortars into parts of the town where they suspect Communist forces may be infiltrating. The streets are almost deserted except for troops arriving in buses and occasional civilians who have not yet fled.

    The deteriorating situation on the West Bank of the Mekong in underlined by the Cambodian Foreign Minister, Yem Sambaur's statement on Monday ( 25 May ) that he would ask the United States to retain its troops in Cambodia after the scheduled June 30th withdrawal.
