Background: THE ANTI-PERONIST UPRISING, STARTED BY THE ARGENTINE NAVY EARLY LAST WEEK AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT JOSE MARIA GUIDO, NOW APPEARS TO BE OVER. THE NAVAL REBEL'S LAST STRONGHOLD, THE BASE AT PUERTO BELGRANO, SOME 350 MILES SOUTH OF BUENOS AIRES, CEASED RESISTANCE ON SATURDAY (APRIL 6.)
AT THE SAME TIME THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAD REACHED AN ACCORD WITH THE REBELLIOUS LEADERS, ENDING THE FOUR DAY CHALLENGE TO AUTHORITY.

GENERAL JUAN CARLOS ONGANIA, THE ARMY COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, HAS ISSUED A COMMUNIQUE ASSERTING THAT THE LOYALIST GOVERNMENT FORCES HAVE WON A VICTORY FOR CONSTITUTIONALISM OVER TOTALITARIANISM.

IT WAS ON APRIL 3 WHEN THE ARMY BEGAN TO MAKE IMPRESSIVE STEPS TOWARDS QUELLING THE REBELLION. THEY RECAPTURED THE BROADCASTING STATIONS HELD BY THE REBELS, LEAVING THE LATTER AT A SERIOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL DISADVANTAGE.

FILM SHOWS THE APRIL 3 FIGHTING AT TWO CENTRES: MAGDALENA, WHERE A GOVERNMENT TANK REGIMENT WAS GARRISONED, AND AT THE NAVAL BASE AT PUNTA INDIO ON THE RIVER PLATE. BOTH PLACES WERE INTENSIVELY BOMBED. THE NAVAL BASE BY GOVERNMENT AIR FORCE PLANES, AND THE GARRISON BY REBEL PLANES.

AIR ATTACKS AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT FORCES AT MAGDALENA, 95 KILOMETRES (59 MILES) FORM THE CAPITAL, KILLED 8 OFFICERS AND MEN AND WOUNDED 18. THE BOMBING RAID ON PUNTA INDIO WAS SUFFICIENTLY EFFECTIVE, FOR A GOVERNMENT TANK FORCE TO CAPTURE THE BASE WITHOUT FIGHTING. IN THE FOUR DAYS OF SPORADIC FIGHTING 40 MEN WERE KILLED AND ABOUT 80 INJURED.

THE NAVY'S AIM WAS TO OVERTHROW PRESIDENT GUIDO'S GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO FORCE THE ABANDONMENT OF PLANS TO ALLOW THE WORKING-CLASS PERONIST PARTY TO CONTEST THE GENERAL ELECTIONS SET FOR JUNE 23 THIS YEAR. HOWEVER THE ARMY AND THE CABINET TO SENOR GUIDO HAD PLEDGED THE RETURN TO "CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY" AND DECLARED THAT THE PERONISTS WOULD BE ALLOWED TO RUN.

(JUAN PERON, A FORMER PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA, IS NOW IN EXILE IN MADRID).
