Background: Thousands of Iranian volunteers marched through the streets of Damascus July 16 in an impressive show of support for PLO forces surrounded in West Beirut. The volunteers came to Damascus on their way to join the PLO in the Lebanese capital, but have been prevented from completing their mission due to the strong Israeli presence around Beirut. The volunteers, who have supplied their own weapons and uniforms, have been stuck in the Syrian capital since the Israeli Defence Force pushed through Southern Lebanon more than six weeks ago. Chanting pro-Palestinian and Iranian slogans the volunteers marched over Israeli and American flags in a gesture of defiance.
