    MR GEORGE BALL, THE UNITED STATES UNDER-SECRETARY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ARRIVED IN ATHENS UNEXPECTEDLY YESTERDAY (JUNE 10), FOR URGENT TALKS ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE.

    HE FLEW IN FROM GENEVA WHERE HE HAD BEEN ATTENDING THE WORLD TRADE CONFERENCE, AND IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO KASTRI, AN ATHENS SUBURB, FOR A MEETING WITH MR. PAPANDREOU, THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER, AND MR. KOSTOPOULOS, THE FOREIGN MINISTER. THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO GREECE, MR. LABOUISSE, ALSO ATTENDED THE TALKS.

    ON HIS ARRIVAL, MR. BALL TOLD REPORTER THAT HIS MISSION TO ATHENS HAD BEEN MADE "IN VIEW OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S FEELINGS OF URGENCY OVER THE CYPRUS PROBLEM".

    AFTER THE MEETING, MR. PAPANDREOU, EXPRESSED SATISFACTION AT THE OUTCOME AND SAID THAT LAST FRIDAY (JUNE 6) HE HAD SENT A PERSONAL MESSAGE TO THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT AFTER HEARING REPORTS THAT TURKEY HAD PLANNED TO INVADE THE TROUBLED ISLAND.

    MR. BALL BROUGHT A REPLY FROM PRESIDENT JOHNSON, BUT THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER REFUSED TO DISCLOSE THE ANSWER.

    FOLLOWING THE 90-MINUTE MEETING, MR. BALL RETURNED TO ATHENS AIRPORT FOR A FLIGHT TO ANKARA, THE TURKISH CAPITAL, WHERE HE PLANNED TO HOLD TALKS TODAY (THURSDAY) WITH TURKISH LEADERS. HE'LL THEN RETURN TO WASHINGTON TO REPORT TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON ON HIS MISSION.
