Background: England's World Soccer Cup team has begun an extensive training programme to prepare for their opening match next month. For the first few days after the team arrived they relaxed....playing golf and attending various sporting events.
England suffered their first "casualty" of the campaign when 20 year-old Brian Kidd of Manchester United came down with a stomach complaint known locally as "Montezuma's Revenge".
The England team is practising at the exclusive British Reform Club on the outskirts of Mexico City. During their programmed they'll play a match against a local British team.... but it'll be at cricket, not football. England's team manager Sir Alf Ramsay wants his players to become used to the high altitude in Mexico over as long a period as possible. One on the few football matches they'll play before the start of the hard practising will be a ten minute game against members of the local press corps.
However, next week the team will start training in earnest. Sir Alf has booked the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City for three practice matches. Behind locked doors, the England squad will play the first of these on Wednesday in the late afternoon, the time of the kickoff for most of the World Cup games.
